Bowman County’s newest deputy got off to a fast start with two collars in December on her first day in “uniform.”

Lulu, a Belgian Malinois, was involved in two arrests on Dec. 6, her first day working for the Bowman County Sheriff’s Department. Both arrests involved illegal drugs, one was marijuana and marijuana paraphernalia.

Lulu works with her K-9 partner, Sgt. Colin Dunn. Her sole assignment is to sniff out drugs.

She is the second K-9 officer that has worked with the department. The first, Ruby, died because of cancer,

The department purchased Lulu from North Iowa K-9. Dunn went to Iowa in November to train with the department’s newest recruit.

Dunn had joined the department as a part-time deputy in 2020 and would become the handler for the first K-9 in November 2021.

About two weeks after the busy first day, Lulu was also involved with Bowman Police Department officer Remi Master where methamphetamine, marijuana, and marijuana analog were seized.

According to Bowman County Sheriff Frank Eberle, the K-9 program recently got a boost in interest and funding. The Scranton Public School’s Pep Club raised $254 and voted to donate $500 for a total of $754 to the Sheriff’s Office K-9 Program.
