Bowman County’s economy relies heavily on its number one industry – agriculture. Farm and ranch operations are diversified, incorporating both crops and livestock production. Spring wheat is the most extensive crop planted, but many others include peas, hay, oats, barley, rye, corn and sunflowers. Beef cattle and sheep are also an important part of the economic cycle of Bowman County. With the wide open spaces and ample prairies, the County is idea for cattle production. The livestock industry dates back to the early 1890’s and is still one of our most important occupations.
Bowman County’s energy sector is its largest employer with abundant oil and natural gas exploration and production.
After years of production, the county ranks as North Dakota’s fifth largest oil producer and the state ranks as second largest in the nation.
