BCDC Launches Mural Grant Program to Boost Beautification and Creative Placemaking

BOWMAN, ND – Bowman County Development Corporation (BCDC) is excited to announce the launch of a new Mural Beautification Grant aimed at supporting public art projects along Bowman’s most visible corridors.

Murals have become a celebrated part of Bowman’s streetscape in recent years, bringing color, character, and pride to the community. This new grant program builds on that momentum by offering financial support to property owners and artists who want to create exterior murals that enhance the city’s aesthetic and sense of place.

“This program is a natural next step in Bowman’s ongoing beautification efforts,” said Brooklyn Engelhart, Director of Tourism and Creative for BCDC. “We’ve seen how murals can transform a space and spark community pride. Now we’re excited to make it easier for more creative projects to come to life.”

The Mural Grant Program complements existing BCDC initiatives, including the Downtown Revitalization Facade Grant, Downtown Seating Matching Program, the Commercial Signage Program, and recent tree plantings along Highway 12 and Main Street, all designed to enhance Bowman’s curb appeal and make the city a more inviting place to live, work, and visit.

Murals funded through the program must be located in Bowman on Highway 12, Highway 85, or Main Street, including alley-facing walls, and must be on exterior walls of commercial properties within the city limits. Each project is eligible for up to 90% of approved costs, with a maximum award of $750.

To apply, artists or property owners must submit a completed application, a rendering of the proposed mural design, a photograph of the proposed building wall, a description of how the surface will be prepared, paint details, an artist biography and quote, an estimated timeline, and a signed property owner agreement if the applicant is not the owner. All projects must be approved by BCDC prior to beginning work and must be completed within twelve months.

Applications are reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis by the committee, which evaluates artistic merit, appropriateness for public display, and alignment with the program’s goals. All murals must be family-friendly, non-political, and non-commercial in nature.

The program is fully funded by the local Restaurant and Lodging Tax.

“We hope this program inspires even more creativity in our community,” said Teran Doerr, Executive Director of BCDC. “By supporting public art in our most visible areas, we’re telling everyone who passes through Bowman that this is a place that values vibrancy, creativity, and hometown pride.”
