Main Street Garden selected as a 2021 AARP Community Challenge Grantee!

Bowman County Development Corporation is thrilled to announce we have been selected to receive a 💸 $10,000 💸 2021 AARP Community Challenge grant from AARP Livable Communities. BCDC is one of only 244 grantees selected from across the USA out of 3,553 applications.

AARP believes that great communities take a long time to build and sustain. But also believes that “quick actions” can be the spark for long-term progress. With this “quick-action” grant we will further develop the 🥒Main Street Garden 🍅 located at 108 S Main St., Bowman, ND to create a unique, fully accessible garden and park space that will include shade structures, benches, tables, flowers, hammocks, and of course, garden beds. The Main Street Garden was first started in 2020 by the efforts of local volunteers and support and has continued forward progress in 2021 due to even more volunteers. The garden provides fresh, locally grown produce for free to the community.

“We are incredibly proud that AARP selected Bowman County Development Corporation to receive this grant,” stated Brooklyn Engelhart, BCDC Creative Marketing Coordinator. “AARP is a nationwide leader on making neighborhoods, towns, and cities more livable for all residents and we are honored that they see the tangible value this project will bring to our community.”

This grant will help provide so many great things to the garden lot, but there are still a few ways we are looking for community support and sponsorship. These include memorial benches, pavers, and grass to make the lot fully accessibly. If you are interested in sponsoring part of the garden or volunteering to help lay pavers, plant grass, water the garden, or help plant in 2022, please reach out to BCDC at 701.523.5880.

About the Community Challenge

The Community Challenge funds innovative projects that inspire change in areas such as transportation, public spaces, housing, diversity and inclusion, civic engagement, coronavirus recovery and more. It’s all part of AARP’s nationwide work on livable communities, which supports the efforts of neighborhoods, towns, cities and counties across the country to become great places for all residents. AARP believes that communities should provide safe, walkable streets; affordable and accessible housing and transportation options; access to needed services; and opportunities for residents to participate in community life.
