With its streamlined, sandy colored exterior, complete with sections of glass and striking splashes of black, the future Bronson’s Marketplace has been touted as one of Bowman’s most appealing buildings.
Completion of the new, 28,000-square-foot Bowman grocer is eagerly anticipated though it’s at the beginning of the process, with the groundbreaking held this week.

“We’re really excited; it’s a great opportunity for us in Bowman,” said Kelly Kessler, co-owner of Bronson’s as he gathered around a crowd of supporters Tuesday at the site next to Ace Hardware on Highway 12.

Kelly and his wife, Kim, took over the Bowman SuperValu from the Sime family earlier this year and haven’t wasted time with their plans to construct a new market.

“It’s an exciting venture, with everyone working together,” Kessler commended.

In attendance at the ceremonial groundbreaking were representatives of multiple local agencies including Emily Bostyan of Wells Fargo, Ron Palczewski of Dakota Western Bank, Bill Green, area sales director for Supervalu, Nathan Lee of the Bowman Area Chamber of Commerce, Bowman City Commission President Lyn James, Bowman County Development Corp. Executive Director Teran Doerr and project representatives with DBS Group, the building’s construction company.

Kim’s mother, Karen Bronson, was also present at the ceremony to witness her daughter and son-in-law’s achievement. Bronson and her late husband, Rich, were the founders and original owners of Bronson’s Marketplace, with its first location in Beulah.

The Bowman location marks the second Bronson’s SuperValu.

“It will be a beautiful store,” said Chris Walters, president of DBS Group of Onalaska, Wis.

Dirt work is currently underway at the site. Foundation work will begin early next month and construction will be “substantially complete” early next spring.

The new store will include grocery, liquor, deli, bakery, produce, meat, dairy and frozen departments, Walters said, adding that it would also be an energy efficient building with modern LED lighting, HVAC and refrigeration systems incorporated.

Bronson’s will have a separate entrance — separated from the entrance to the Shopko and Ace Hardware plaza — off Highway 12, complete with a large, well-lit parking lot.
