Two years after building a new airport on the east side of Bowman, the hard work and persistence of the Bowman County Airport Authority has been acknowledged at the state level.

It took nearly 10 years of cooperation with local, state and federal authorities before construction could finally break ground in 2014.

The previous airport, located immediately west of the city along Highway 12, didn’t boast a long enough landing strip for larger planes, among other issues.

“It was a big deal,” said Rodney Schaaf, chairman of the Bowman County Airport Authority.

And that “big deal” was honored during the Upper Midwest Aviation Symposium held in early March in Minot.

Though the awards were presented at the symposium’s closing, it had already been a long wait for Bowman’s regional airport.

And it was worth it.

The airport was named the 2016 General Aviation Service Airport of the Year.

“It was an honor to receive this award on behalf of my fellow Board members and County Commissioners,” said Schaaf. “We are proud of our airport and it’s service to the surrounding community.”

The Commercial Service Airport of the Year was awarded to Bismarck Airport.

There are 81 general aviation airports and eight commercial airports in North Dakota, and now Bowman’s is at the top.
