Southwest District Judge Zane Anderson announces his retirement

August 07, 2015

A press release sent Friday by the North Dakota Supreme Court stated that Anderson announced his intentions Tuesday and stated that North Dakota Century Code requires the court to investigate and decide whether the Dickinson office is “necessary for effective judicial administration” in the event of such a vacancy.

The release said it has been ordered that the Supreme Court “undertake a written consultation with the attorneys and judges of the Southwest Judicial District,” and determine the future of the court from there.

Anderson, who was elected in 1990, is likely to be replaced as a fourth judge was appointed to the Southwest Judicial District by Gov. Jack Dalrymple in late July. Rhonda Ehlis, an assistant state’s attorney for Stark County, will fill that position.

Anderson is a Hettinger native and graduated from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, where he also attended law school. He spent six years as Bowman County’s state’s attorney in the late 1970s and early ’80s, and had a private practice from 1987 to 1990 before being elected to the judgeship.

The Southwest Judicial District serves Adams, Billings, Bowman, Dunn, Golden Valley, Hettinger, Slope and Stark counties.
