“It’s alway fun to get an award,” said Sarah Snavely, Library Director in Bowman.

Snavely said they were unaware of the awards, or even that they were in the running for something prior to being notified that they had actually won.

Sixteen libraries—divided into different classes by their operating expenditures—from across the state were awarded star library recognition at the Renewal and Development Conference on April 17. Connie Gaebe was present to accept the award on behalf of the library. Also recognized in Bowman’s category was the Beulah Public Library and the Lisbon Public Library.

The state library looked at the following categories to determine Star Libraries: circulation (number of books/materials checked out), central branch services hours, program attendance, combined computer and WiFi usage, and the percentage of North Dakota Library Coordinating Council Standards for Public Libraries met. The following statistics from the Bowman library that went into consideration for the awards: circulation (21,778, 5,527 were kids’ materials), service hours (44 hours per week), visitors (25,526), programs (123), total attendance (3,484), computer usage  (10,300), WiFi usage (45,402), total computer and WiFi usage (55,702), reference questions answered (6,615), and the library also has met the North Dakota State Library Council Standards—which are a list of categories ranging from budget to technology.

“We keep track of everything here,” she said. “We’re required to submit these statistics to the state every year. So we always do that.”

Snavely said they have tremendous support from the community and the board of directors, and that the award is just a testimony of that support.

“I just think it’s nice to be recognized,” she said. “I’m always amazed at this community, we couldn’t have accepted any award like this…if people didn’t use the library, it is definitely an indication of the support that the library gets from the community.”
