Better late than never.

Shopko gave the official word in a statement last week explaining that it had finished the transaction for purchasing the former Alco building in Bowman. And — to nobody’s surprise — will transform the location into the newest Shopko Hometown store.

Banners have been at the site for weeks counting down to the store’s big opening and a mass mailing even went out to residents in the area from new store manager Scott Sola, the former Alco manager, with a $10 off coupon.

The location, on 320 Highway 12 East in Bowman, has a scheduled opening date for the end of March.

The conversion to Shopko Hometown will include new interior and exterior signage, carpet, paint, updated and supplement fixtures and lighting and a new, easy to shop store layout, according to Michelle Hansen, a spokesperson for Green Bay, Wisc.-based Shopko.

“We’re excited to bring Shopko Hometown to Bowman,” said Peter McMahon, Shopko CEO, in the statement.

The Shopko Hometown store format, featuring a “unique” merchandising strategy and “improved” store design, is an ideal fit for Bowman, with its “exceptional service and community-minded approach,” McMahon added.

“We understand that consumers in smaller towns are looking for value and convenience without having to travel outside the community; customers of our Hometown stores tell us they appreciate the vastly improved shopping experience,” he said.

The new store will be part of the over 175 Shopko Hometown stores, effectively making Shopko one of the nation’s largest retailers serving smaller communities, according to the release.

The Shopko Hometown retail format, developed to augment Shopko’s larger store model and focused on serving the needs of smaller rural communities, provides an offering of national brands and private label brands of apparel, home furnishings, toys, consumer electronics, seasonal items, every day consumable items and lawn and garden products.
